This piece, regarding the cosmology of the compass, begins the unfolding of mysteries by starting at the central point (the Witch) then moving outward into the wild, dark, and hushed landscapes of the Otherworld immediately surrounding the Compass from there.
The Overarching Structure of Stardust Compass Rites
The core seed of the cosmology of the Stardust Compass is most easily represented by the mental image of a vertical pole crossed by two diagonal lines, all of which intersect at their central most point. For many witches they will see this as the primordial four directions, augmented by skyward and earthward with the central point being a horizontal pivot upon the vertical axis. The terminus of each line represents a realm unto which the wisdom, benevolence, and guidance of the spirits are sought; a fundamental Otherworld domain to which the Stardust Compass is tied. To these realms the Witch might travel in spirit flight, or from them the Witch might befriend the spirits, beseeching their presence and aid when performing rites.
At the center point, the crossroads of all things, stands the Witch. From here the Witch need simply look up to witness the midnight landscape of the Celestial realm (commonly known as the Upperworld), descend to discover the hidden and whispered Chthonic Realm beneath them (commonly known as the Underworld), and look outward unto the four directions to find those uncharted landscapes spread out around them, both foreboding yet beautiful.
All of these domains lie within the Otherworld, but a keen witch should know that none exist with hard borders. They are but regions and locations within a greater landscape populated by spirits both strange and fantastic. A singular “world” that is much deeper, stranger, and more fantastic than our own.
The Spirits of the ComPASS
Much akin to various other witching traditions, the Stardust Compass maintains ruling entities which prevail over the four points of the compass round. These geniuses, moving clockwise from the sunrise, are the Fox, the Hare, the Toad, and the Raven.
The Fox dances through a vast desert landscape of the East, associated with the color Red. Blasted by the heat of the Sun and the ravages of time, the East appears to be a barren wasteland. Naturally, looks are deceiving; for even this realm of Fire holds mysteries and secrets hiding within the scorching heat and under the desert sand. This is the land where sex, strength, force, passion, lust, potency, and exorcism magicks all reign supreme - especially when conjoined with the Spring Equinox (the height of Fire in the cycle of the year) or the dawn. The Fox hirself guards the secrets to the Knife, Lantern, and Drum while holding the key to the cunning flame of the witch.
A quick and cunning beast, the Hare is not easily outsmarted nor caught, associated with the color Green. Ze darts about in abundant fields of verdant leaf, midnight root, and flowers of infinite shape and shade. The Earthen hills and prairies of the South, overflowing with herb and wort (both baneful and benevolent), are hir home. This is a realm where land, fertility, abundance, wealth, growth, healing (physical), and stability magicks all reign supreme - especially when conjoined with the Summer Solstice (the height of Earth in the cycle of the year) or mid-day. The Hare hirself guards the secrets to the Paten, Sickle, and Stone while holding the key to the body & bones of the witch.
Moving silently under the Water of the West is the slippery Toad. Hiding in dark pools of clear black water ze swims, understanding secrets of the hidden landscapes of emotions and dreams. This is the land where cleansing, transformation, healing (emotional), dream, and emotion magicks all reign supreme - especially when conjoined with the Autumnal Equinox (the height of Water in the cycle of the year) or dusk. The Toad hirself guards the secrets to the Cauldron, Broom, and Cup, while holding the key to the blood & heart of the witch. The color of hir compass point is Blue.
The Raven flies as a stalwart guardian of the wind-whipped realm of the North under an eclipsed Moon at midnight. This land of Air is one of the spirits (ancestral and not) wherein communication travels swiftest and purest. This is the land where blasting, ancestral, divination, communication, binding, and cursing magicks all reign supreme - especially when conjoined with the Winter Solstice (the height of Air in the cycle of the year) or Midnight. The Raven hirself guards the secrets to the Skull, Spear, and Shew Stone while holding the key to the breath & mind of the witch. The color of hir compass point is Black.
