Preface to Current Edition

This version (v1.1) of the Oathtaking was taken, as written, by myself and three other witches upon the witchs' new year several years ago. It has not been updated since, and contains content or information which might be unclear to the reader. Apologies. The information necessary will be published on this site, or clarified within this document, in time.

Additionally, the rite is written for a cast of three, even though the spirits have since informed me that it shall eventually contain a solitary variant as well (as will all rites within the Stardust Compass).

This rite will evolve and change in time: both due to the endless evolution of any living path, and to accommodate the emerging spirit gnosis.

For now, I present to you the rite as written at it's initial conception (with a few small early 2016 edits).

Any witch wishing to undertake this working will do so at their own peril, both physically and spiritually.

May you be prepared for what you bind yourself to.

Ritual Preparation

To be performed with a minimum of three individuals: one undergoing the Oathtaking (the Witch¹), one acting as the subsumed protector of the tradition (the Guardian), and one acting as the guide to the Oathtaker (the Watcher). Others who’ve undergone the rite can be in attendance, silent on the perimeter.

Rite is ideally performed during an Open Gate [Dark Moon] to empower the working with the forces of binding and oath fulfillment.

At the compass's center shall lie a fire (or single candle, if indoors). The Stang shall be placed in the North (unmasked). At it’s base shall be the grimoire (which contains the Oaths to be sworn, and betwixt it's pages lie the Witch’s red and black threads), the skull (for Ka’braeh Zet as Braeh Kacara) and the sickle (for Ka’anin Vaesh as Anin Vadera). Sacred food and drink shall be placed in the South.

Until moved otherwise, the Witch shall stand South-of-Center, facing North.

The Watcher shall cast the compass thrice sinistral with the Stang, starting in the North, and employing dark whispers focused on oaths, bonds, trust, secrecy, unity, etc. Raven, Toad, Hare, and Fox are then evoked in their aspects of guardians of the path and protectors of their unique mysteries. The Watcher shall then stand North-of-Center facing South (the Witch).

The Guardian shall evoke Ka’herin Ta’al, Ka’anin Vaesh, and Ka’braeh Zet - asking them to assume their mighty thrones. Ka’herin Ta’al is evoked to guide and see this rite of witching through, and take the Oath in zer name. Ka’anin Vaesh is evoked in zer aspect of Anin Vadera, to take the cuttings of the Oath as a harvest with zer blade. Ka’braeh Zet is evoked in zer aspect of Ka’braeh Kacara, to accept the blood offering of the witch.

The Guardian shall invoke / aspect Ka’herin Ta’al to the best of zer ability and then begin the rite proper as follows.

All ritual movements, if possible, shall be performed sinistral until after the Oath to the 7 Thrones is accepted. All present but not participating are encouraged to add their energies to the rite as they see fit, be it to the Guardian, the Watcher, the Witch, or other foci as so called.

The Rite

The Guardian should be standing in the North with the Stang, Skull, and Sickle behind zer. At this point the Witch shall be standing South-of-Center and the Watcher shall be standing North-of-Center, both facing each other.

Guardian:

The compass is cast, the Keyholder rises. Bring the blood offering of the Witch forth unto the Dragon’s Maw.

Watcher:

I shall guide you now to your doom², do you accept?

The Watcher allows the Witch to respond in the affirmative, prompting if needed.

The Watcher takes the Witch by the wrist and guides them straight from Center (everything the Witch is now) to the West (shall be transformed), South (and receive abundance), East (by inflaming), and ending in North (the mysteries). Parentheticals should be silently evoked by the Watcher during the journey.

The Witch shall be positioned, by the Watcher, to face the Guardian. The Watcher shall take the black thread from the Grimoire, and then stand behind the Witch.

Guardian (each line is repeated by the Witch):

I, [give your full name]³, swear to the eldest Raven,
That I shall keep secret,
And expound upon,
The mysteries.

I shall employ silence with wisdom,
And accept that nothing is true.
If I break my oath,
I demand the Raven,
Pluck out my tongue.

Guardian:

Turn, and do not look back.

The Witch shall turn 180° (ideally over their left shoulder) to face the Watcher. The Watcher shall give physical guidance if needed for the Witch to turn around to face zer. If the Witch turns over their right shoulder do not correct them.

Guardian:

The Northern Airs accept your oath,
And honor your allegiance.

The Watcher gives the Witch the black thread⁴, instructing them to hold it in their left⁵ hand.

The Guardian moves to the West while this occurs.

The Watcher waits until the Guardian is in position and then, taking the Witch by the hand, moves zer to the West. After positioning the Witch to face the Guardian, the Watcher resumes standing behind zer.

Guardian (each line is repeated by the Witch):

I, _________, swear to the mysterious Toad,
That I shall deepen,
And be inflamed by,
The current.
I shall encourage its vitality,
And receive gnosis in all things.
If I break my oath,
I demand the Toad,
Extinguish my spirit.

Guardian:

Turn, and do not look back.

The Witch shall turn 180° (ideally over their left shoulder) to face the Watcher.

Guardian:

The Western Waters accept your oath,
And honor your allegiance.

The Watcher ties the black thread around the Witch’s left wrist (which is on the Watcher’s right) and has them hold the long end in their left hand⁶.

The Guardian moves to the South while this occurs.

The Watcher waits until the Guardian is in position and then, taking the Witch by the hand, moves zer to the South. After positioning the Witch to face the Guardian, the Watcher shall take the red thread from the Grimoire, and then stand behind the Witch.

Guardian (each line is repeated by the Witch):

I, _________, swear to the abundant Hare,
That I shall respect all gifts,
And share amongst my kinship,
Those bequeathed unto me.
I shall honor their source,
And manifest them without hesitation.
If I break my oath,
I demand the Hare,
Topple my home.

Guardian:

Turn, and do not look back.

The Witch shall turn 180° (ideally over their left shoulder) to face the Watcher.

Guardian:

The Southern Fields accept your oath,
And honor your allegiance.

The Watcher gives the Witch the red thread⁷, instructing them to hold it in their right hand.

The Guardian moves to the East while this occurs.

The Watcher waits until the Guardian is in position and then, taking the Witch by the hand, moves zer to the East. After positioning the Witch to face the Guardian, resumes standing behind zer.

Guardian (each line is repeated by the Witch):

I, _________, swear to the brilliant Fox,
That I shall treat my kinship with,
Upon receiving in kind,
Trust, honor, and respect.
I shall work no ill upon them,
And support them with a full heart.
If I break my oath,
I demand the Fox,
Snuff out my passion.

Guardian:

Turn, and do not look back.

The Witch shall turn 180° (ideally over their left shoulder) to face the Watcher.

Guardian:

The Eastern Fires accept your oath,
And honor your allegiance.

The Watcher ties the red thread around the Witch’s right wrist (which is on the Watcher’s left) and has them hold the long end in their right hand.

The Guardian moves to north, retrieves the sickle, and then moves directly to North-of-Center while this occurs.

The Watcher waits until the Guardian is in position and then, taking the Witch by the hand, moves zer to South-of-Center. This involves a ¾ sinistral circumambulation around the space moving behind the Guardian to North (the mystery), West (of death), South (shall manifest), then South-of-Center (as Adraxen devours you).

The Watcher has the Witch clasp their hands together. The Watcher then wraps the left cord around the right wrist (by crossing over the top) and pulls the remaining out over the clasped hands, followed by the same with the right cord around the left wrist⁸. The Watcher then ties a single knot near the end of the cord (opposite the Witch's wrists) therein binding the red and black cords together⁹.

The Watcher moves to stand to the right of the Guardian, and holds the now-combined threads tight in zer left hand with the clenched fist placed against the heart of the Guardian¹⁰. The Witch’s hands, still clasped, should be extended over the Center / Adraxen’s maw¹¹ / the Fire or Candle. The Guardian, holding the Sickle in zer right hand, shall place it directly over the taught threads (blade facing down, but not resting upon the threads), and hold the grimoire in zer left hand¹².

Guardian (each line is repeated by the Witch):

I, _________, offer myself to the 7 thrones,
Ka’anin Vaesh,
Ze of of Seed, Sickle, and Skull,
To Ka’braeh Zet,
Ze of Sex, Spear, and Star,
And to Ka’herin Ta’al,
The Keyholder of our fate.
7 thrones, hear me.
If I break my oaths,
Judge me harshly and without mercy.
Bring upon me suffering, destruction, and death.
If I abandon the path,
Take back all you have given,
And leave me as I was before.
If I honor my oaths,
Illuminate my way,
And guide me along,
This crooked path.

The Guardian brings the sickle down and cuts through the threads. The Watcher throws them into the fire while saying:

Watcher:

The oath has been heard.

The Witch may now release zer hands.

Guardian:

From Fox to Hare, Toad to Raven, as witnessed by the 7 holy thrones, your sacrifice is accepted!

May this crooked path be ever open to you.

All movement from this point should be dextral. The sickle and grimoire are replaced in the North by the Guardian.

Food and drink are consumed by all present, lead by the Witch, in honor of the Oathtaking, both to ground the Witch and to be the first offering made unto the spirits and gods by the Witch post-Oathtaking.

The Witch moves dextral to the South, retrieves the food, and offers it to the South, West, North, East, Center, finally consuming a piece after all offerings are made. The Witch then returns to South and repeats this pattern with the drink.

If the Witch is the final Oathtaking of the evening, upon offering to the spirits and consuming zer portion, the Guardian, Watcher, and others standing witness may join in consuming a portion of food and drink as well.

¹ Capitalized within the Oathtaking Rite as to denote a specific individual & ritual title extant within the rite proper, and not merely a individual practitioner of witchcraft.

² a.k.a. Fate.

³ This should be the name to which the world knows you by the most. If this is not your legal name, utilize that. Eg: “Rick” as opposed to “Richard” or “Lady Gaga” as opposed to “Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta.”

⁴ Black representing the alchemical first phase, the beginning of the work. Further and also representing the energies of the North (sacred color: black), specifically the works of bindings. The left hand (sinistral hand) being connected to workings of the North (binding, etc) and the West (subconscious and inner workings).

⁵ This is the first time the Witch is given back partial control over their Fate, as represented by the black thread. However, this new Fate is not yet bound to them.

⁶ The Witch's new Fate is now bound to them, and control over their Fate is given to them by allowing them to hold the thread in their hand.

⁷ Red representing the alchemical final phase, the end of the work (only for it to then begin again). Further and also representing the energies of the East (sacred color: red), specifically the works of the blood & will of the Witch. The right hand (dextral hand) being connected to workings of the East (moving energy outward) and South (blessings).

⁸ Placing the right cord over the left wrist, and visa-versa, causes the energies to mix and conjoin, further amplifying the standard modality captured in “a Witch must be able to harm as well as heal, curse as well as cure,” and ensuring that the Witch’s energies wrap back upon themselves for the final oath taking.

⁹ Functionally this aides the Guardian and Watcher to ensure that the Witch’s cords are forever bound together in this world and the next. Magickally this act is the final acknowledgement of the initial statement that the Witch made earlier in the rite when asked if they were willing to be led to their doom. The Witch accepted then, and was guided forth through the oath taking, but it was not until this particular moment, when their doom was at hand, that such words were captured as they stood on the anti-pole from where they began.

¹⁰ This causes the heart of the Guardian to be deeply opened for this working, and the sickle is swung from a place of love and mercy rather than a place of malice or hatred.

¹¹ The Witch’s hands being placed over a sacred flame purifies them, and therein the Witch standing at the Center's edge. Further, being clasped creates a circuit of energy within the Witch, causing them become a cauldron which is “cooked” over the fire and transmuted as a holy philtre.

¹² This causes the left & right arms of the Guardian and Watcher to be crossed, creating the crossed bones of the dead (ancestors / Ka'anin Vaesh as Anin Vadera) which is an amplification of the use of the Sickle to cut the cords. Ka'braeh Zet (as Ka'braeh Kacara) oversees the rite from the North, guarding and protecting the space for this solemn act of blood sacrifice.
